Team: Coressa the Alolan Vulpix, Chumirra the Marill, and
Morling the FloatzelAyrol the TogepiBattle Details:
Allura's prepared by sparring with and asking for advice from friends, watching the falconry demos per Romelle's suggestion, and waiting for a day when it promises to snow to increase the chance of hail.
First up will be Coressa, not only for her experience and type advantage, but because she has higher Special Defenses to resist Noctowl's Psychic attacks. However, she is a bit of a glass cannon, and Noctowl is immune to Ghost moves, so Allura will have the Vulpix focus on using her speed, Aurora Veil, and possible Snow Cloak to keep her distance from any physical attacks and counter with Ice attacks at long range, saving Disable for any really troublesome moves.
For Honchkrow, Allura will switch to Chumirra. Honchkrow is a much more physical attacker, but thanks to being part Fairy, her experience advantage, her more robust constitution and defense, and the ability Huge Power, Chumirra will be a hard hitter against Honchkrow, especially with Play Rough. And for extra assurance, Allura will have her set up Rain Dance on the first move and Aqua Ring at roughly 60% health so Chumirra can hit harder and last longer in battle.
And lastly for Pidgeot, Allura will attempt to send out Morling the Floatzel, matching hard-hitting striker with a hard-hitting striker who also happens to know Ice Fang, and piggy-backing off the Rain Dance for Swift Swim...
I say "attempt" because it's at this point that tiny, squishy little Togepi Ayrol says he wants to try since his besties have been fighting so hard! Seriously, the speech he makes in Poké-speak is probably toothache-inducing levels of Anime Protagonist Inspiring, even Morling is crying. So... yeah, have a fairy birb chick for an opponent, Pidgeot.
Obviously while Ayrol has a good enough level, good physical and special defenses, and no immediate weaknesses to Pidgeot's typing... baby has a teeny tiny health bar, an even lower Attack stat, and mostly status/multi-battle support moves. This is gonna be a rough match-up, especially against Falkner's ace, but it's not like Ayrol's totally helpless either. He has Sweet Kiss and Yawn at his disposal to set up confusion or sleep (hopefully Pidgeot has Keen Eye instead of Tangled Feet), Morning Sun and Life Dew to recover health so he can keep fighting. As for attacks, Allura picked up a Dazzling Gleam TM for him in Cherrygrove, and not only is Ancient Power a Rock-type move, it has a chance of boosting all five stats by one stage, 20% thanks to Serene Grace, which can turn spamming it before he runs out of juice really nasty really quickly. And while Allura would save Metronome and Double-Edge as absolute last resorts, there's a chance Metronome could pull something super-effective for Pidgeot out of its hat. And if this crazy strategy works, at the end of this Ayrol will evolve into a beautiful Togetic! (Don't worry, mods, not gonna pull an evolutio ex machina mid-battle.)

Team: Glicynia the Galarian Rapidash, Fraldor the Luxray, and Kirlos the Altaria
Battle Details:
First up is Glicynia against Girafarig. On paper, the match-up seems neutral at best, subpar at worst, given Girafarig is resistant to Psychic and only normally affected by Fairy, and has access to Ghost moves Astonish and possibly Shadow Ball that could mess up Glicynia if they hit. But not only does the Rapidash have an experience advantage, she’s a bit sturdier than the Long Neck Pokémon, considerably faster with a higher Attack, and she has a secret weapon… Megahorn! So Allura’s strategy is to take the initiative and just charge in with Megahorn before Girafarig has a chance to retaliate. If Girafarig manages to survive the initial assault and fight back, Glicynia has a Persim berry to ward against confusion, and should be able to endure a hit long enough to attempt another Megahorn, plus or minus a Bounce beforehand to possibly paralyze Girafarig and hold it still for a better shot.
For Clefable, Allura will bring out Fraldor. At first, the typing seems pretty neutral, but Allura chose him for the experience advantage and the resistance to Steel and Electric moves and neutrality to the rest of Cefable’s moveset in case this one is as loaded with TMs as in the games, immunity to paralysis, and a formidable arsenal of attacks. (Not to mention the Nidorina Allura got from Rainer is still VERY spicy...) Fraldor will start off with Light Screen and Flash in order to make it harder for Clefable to land an attack and to cause Special Attacks to do less damage if they do hit. And while Fraldor does excel in physical attacks, Allura doesn’t want to risk Clefable having Cute Charm and have Fraldor be infatuated, so instead the Luxray will attack from a distance with Thunder Wave to cause paralysis and follow it up with Thunder. If Clefairy manages to land anything that’ll cause a non-paralysis status condition, he has a Lum Berry on him that at least should keep Allura out of a loop of healing for a while.
And last but not least, it’s Kirlos versus Miltank! This might seem a bit risky, given that Kirlos is Dragon/Flying going against Miltank’s infamous Rollout, but there’s a reason for this. Agility and Cotton Guard will give him much-needed boosts to Speed and Defense to throw off Miltank's rhythm and to endure her physical attacks. And it’ll be pretty hard for Miltank to use Rollout if Kirlos Sings her to sleep, and she only has the one Lum berry to wake her up again. That sets Kirlos up nicely to hit her with a Hurricane for a powerful Special move with a 30% chance to confuse her, followed by Fly if she’s still standing.

Team: Chunella the Dedenne, Oriande the Gardevoir, and Juna the Florges
Battle Details:
Allura will wait a bit after the Braviary craziness to give herself, Jane, and everyone else and their teams a chance to recover because *lord* they earned it last week. Allura will also be taking Keith with her for the Escape Room (hope you don't mind this doubling as a date for them, Jane~)
First up, Ribbon’s opponent will be Chunella. This match-up might seem rough on paper, given they’re neutral to each other’s Typing and Chunella is squishy against the Mimikyu’s more physical moveset while Ribbon has a higher special defense, but Allura is counting on the Dedenne’s speed advantage to gain and keep the momentum of the battle. First off, Thunder Wave to slow Ribbon down even more and hopefully cut down the number of attacks it can land, then blast with Charge Beam and Thunder from a distance. If the paralysis wears off and/or Ribbon lands a hit anyway, Chunella will counter with Nuzzle to paralyze again so she can get away, and Parabolic Charge will help keep her healed until the round is over.
For Hughie, Allura will bring out Oriande. Given that Allura just caught a Litleo during the Braviary incident, if the Zoroark uses its Illusion ability, it’ll come out as a cute little lion cub. … And get met with an Aura Sphere from the Gardevoir (thanks, Legends), which is just as super-effective against Dark as it is Normal, sooo have fun with that, Hughie. After the Illusion drops, Allura will have Oriande focus on Fairy moves like Moonblast and Dazzling Gleam from a distance since Hughie is immune to Psychic and a much more physical attacker than the Gardevoir, and she’s a touch under-leveled. If Hughie does get in close enough to land a hit, Oriande will counter with Draining Kiss, and she has Life Dew to help keep herself healed until the Zoroark drops.
Last but not least, Juna versus Todd! The Garden Pokémon will have to be careful because again, squishy vs physical hitter, but the more even levels and the Type advantage should definitely help. Juna will start off with Lucky Chant to protect her from critical hits for five moves, and just like before, attack from a distance with Moonblast and Dazzling Gleam. Unlike the others, she doesn’t have any immediate healing moves beyond Aromatherapy for status effects, so whenever she gets a chance Juna will also make a Wish in order to heal on the next turn.

Team: Avara the Lycanroc, Lovebug the Ribombee, and Nara the Pyroar
Battle Details:
Starting off, Pinsir’s opponent will be Avara. The two are pretty well-matched in terms of stats, but Avara has the immediate advantage in terms of typing and experience. Still, Pinsir has quite a few Fighting moves at its disposal, and Avara’s more suited for offense and speed than defense, so she’ll need to be careful and keep her distance. So Avara will start off with a Sand Attack followed by Double Team to make it harder for Pinsir to land an attack, then trap Pinsir in a Rock Tomb to hold it still for Stone Edge. If Pinsir does manage to get close enough to hit her, she has Counter and Reversal to dish the damage back before trying to get that distance between them again; even if Pinsir is resistant to Fighting moves, if it uses a super-effective Fighting move on Avara, that still sets up the Bug-type to take a LOT of damage.
Next up is Lovebug versus Heracross. While the Ribombee is resistant to Bug and double resistant to Fighting, she'll still need to be careful of Heracross's Aerial Ace and Stone Edge since she's much squishier than the Single Horn Pokémon. Still, Lovebug has an advantage in experience and especially in Speed, so to start she'll send a Stun Spore Heracross's way to paralyze it. This will trigger Guts if Heracross has it, but Allura doesn't plan on getting in close enough to find out. So once again, attacking from a distance with Dazzling Gleam, and if Heracross does manage to get in close enough to land a blow, she'll counter with Draining Kiss to keep herself healed.
And for Scizor, Allura will send out Nara. This one is very straightforward, especially with Scizor's double weakness to Fire and Nara being significantly faster, even when they're more equal in levels than the last two rounds. A couple of well-placed Flamethrowers from a distance should work nicely- since Nara's squishier than Scizor but Scizor's special defense isn't as bulky as his physical defense- and if Scizor does manage to get close enough to land a hit, Nara will retaliate with a Fire Fang.

Team: Nara the Pyroar,
Avara the LycanrocEloris the Skitty, and Headbando the BewearBattle Details:
First up is Nara versus Haunter. Of course being part Normal gives her immunity to Ghost moves, but not only does she have an experience advantage and slightly stronger stats all around, especially in Speed, Nara also knows Crunch. So Allura's strategy is to have Nara charge in close and wail on Haunter with as many Crunches and Fire Fangs as possible for the super-effective damage and the STAB and burn chance, respectively. Haunter has a lot of nasty status moves up its sleeve though, so Nara is armed with a Lum Berry to keep her out of a healing loop, at least for a while. If Haunter manages to get away, the Crunches should have lowered Haunter's already low Special Defense for Nara to hit it with Flamethrower before lunging in for another flurry of Crunches and Fire Fangs.
For Misdreavus, Allura plans on sending out Avara... but then Eloris decides you know what, Misdreavus looks like someone fun to play with, she wants to battle! So have a tiny pink cat, Morty. Normally this would be a very risky, considering the Skitty's squishier stats and Normalize rendering *all* of her moveset to a type the Screech Pokémon is immune to. But not only does Eloris have a considerable experience advantage over Misdreavus, the little kitty has two aces up her sleep: Foresight and Sing. So she'll set those up first to negate Misdreavus immunity to Normal and put it to sleep, which will double the power of the following Wake-Up Slap on top of the boost it already gets from Normalize. If that doesn't finish the job, Eloris will be in close enough to use Play Rough and Fury Swipes, and Payback if Misdreavus manages to land a heavy enough attack. She also has Heal Bell to protect her from the ghost's status-heavy moveset for at least a while, and Allura will arm her with a Sitrus Berry before going in.
Finally, it's only fitting that Allura uses one of Rainer's old Pokémon to take on the Ghost specialist's ace, especially one with considerably more experience. While the mutual immunity does cut down on a lot of Headbando's moveset, there are only two that Allura really needs: Brutal Swing and Payback. So like with Haunter, Allura's strategy is to try and close the gap as soon as possible and go at it with Brutal Swing, and if Gengar manages to get in a hit as well- especially if it still has access to Focus Blast- counter with Payback. Still, Gengar has a considerable Speed advantage (though that will help with the Payback portion of Allura's strategy), as well as a lot of status moves and the ability Cursed Body, so Allura will keep a close eye on the battle to keep Headbando healed, especially since Klutz means the Bewear can't use berries.
Tactician Badge
Allura will choose Ampharos, Tyranitar, and Blissey.
Allura will start out with Ampharos and Thunder Wave first, given that two out of three of Sion’s Pokémon are Flying types and Typhlosion has no resistance to Electric or paralysis either. The paralysis will also mess with Archeops’s Speed advantage over Ampharos and how many attacks he can land, giving Ampharos time to set up Confuse Ray (given that paralysis and confusion are non-volatile and volatile, respectively, they can stack) before Thunder and Power Gem, barraging Archeops from a distance and refreshing the status conditions as necessary, keeping Ampharos healed in case Archeops manages to land something like Endeavor. (Although with Static, Archeops will probably want to avoid contact moves anyway.) Still, Roar or U-Turn might throw Allura’s rhythm for a second if Archeops manages to pull one of them off. In the former case, she’ll let her new Pokémon get in a move (Rock Slide, Ice Beam, Sing in Archeops isn't currently paralyzed, etc.) before switching Ampharos back in; in the latter, she’ll proceed to one of the strategies below until Archeops is brought back in and continue from before.
For Typhlosion, Allura will bring out Tyranitar. Not only is there a good type advantage with Rock vs Fire, but Tyranitar will turn out to have considerably higher stats in everything but Special Attack and Speed, and the Sand Stream Ability should whip up a nice sandstorm for a little extra damage per turn, lowered accuracy, and making Solar Beam slower and much weaker. Since Tyranitar doesn’t have any status moves, Allura will start off with Screech to lower Typhlosion’s Defense before wailing with Rock Slide, Earthquake, and Ancient Power, with Rock Slide having a flinch chance and Ancient Power having a chance to raise all of Tyranitar’s stats by one stage. Since Typhlosion doesn’t have any switching moves, the only moves that could really cause a problem would be Toxic (if Tyranitar isn't burned first) and Smokescreen. For the former, Allura can use an Antidote, but if Smokescreen lowers Tyranitar’s accuracy to the point she can’t land any attacks, Allura will switch to Ampharos and continue the same strategy he had with Archeops.
Finally, Allura will choose Blissey versus Pidgeot. She’s a bit more familiar with Pidgeot’s strengths and weaknesses thanks to her battle with Falkner, and not only is Blissey neutral to Pidgeot’s typing (and, coincidentally, all of the Bird Pokémon’s attacks), it looks like she has some nice super-effective special attacks in her arsenal, as well as healing moves to keep her tremendous HP pool in tip-top shape. So Allura will have Blissey start off with Sing to make Pidgeot fall asleep, then Minimize to raise her evasion (which should thankfully work since Pidgeot has Tangled Feet instead of Keen Eye). Once that's set up, she'll hit the birdie with Thunder and Ice Beam, both of which have status effect chances which are doubled thanks to Serene Grace, adding Flamethrower to the mix if Pidgeot uses Roost and isn't already frozen, so that’s high chances of Pidgeot being frozen, burned or especially paralyzed if the Bird Pokémon wakes up. The only troublesome moves of Pidgeot's are Hurricane, U-Turn, and Whirlwind. If Hurricane manages to confuse Blissey, she does have a low-enough Attack, high-enough HP, and healing moves that confusion damage shouldn’t be too strong, as well as a high Special Defense to endure Pidgeot’s onslaught since all of her attacks but U-Turn are special instead of physical. In case of U-Turn (if Sion’s other Pokémon are still standing), Allura will have Blissey Sing at them before switching to one of the above strategies (save for Tyranitar not using Earthquake against a Flying Pokémon, of course); for Whirlwind, Allura will let the new Pokémon let off an attack before switching Blissey back in.

Team: Plattran the Pikachu, Nikki the Nidoqueen, and Morling the Floatzel
Battle Details:
First up is Plattran versus Skarmory. Plattran is a lot more equal in level to Skarmory than the next two matches, but while Skarmory may have the advantage in defenses and HP, Plattran has a higher Special Attack and a MUCH higher Speed. Starting off, Thunder Wave to paralyze the Armor Bird, followed by Charge and Electric Terrain to boost the following Electro Ball, which already has a high power thanks to Skarmory's Speed being halved by the paralysis and to Plattran holding a Magnet. If Skarmory manages to get in close for an attack, Plattran will counter with either Nuzzle or Thunder Punch, depending on whether the paralysis has worn off, and leap away to keep bombarding Skarmory with special Electric attacks from a distance.
Next, Magneton's opponent will be Nikki. While each side has one type immunity to the other, Allura is going to focus on Magneton's double weakness to Ground. Nikki starts with Mud Shot for a super-effective physical attack that'll lower Magneton's accuracy, followed by Bite until Magneton flinches, setting up Nikki to use Earth Power without being hindered by Light Screen, and repeat until Magneton goes down.
And finally, Morling gets a chance at a gym battle against Steelix! Not only is Water resistant to Steel, but being part Ground gives Steelix a weakness to Water. First Morling uses Whirlpool to trap Steelix and add a little extra damage per turn, and instead of charging in and trying to wittle down Steelix's insane defense, Morling will attack from a distance with Hydro Pump and Scald, then Brine once Steelix's health is low enough, all aided by the Floatzel holding a Scope Lens. If it manages to close the gap to attack Morling, he'll counter with either Aqua Tail or Rock Smash before moving away again to continue the onslaught.
Storm Badge
Character: Princess Allura |
Badge/Gym Leader: Chuck, Storm Badge
Elite/Regular: Regular
Team: Keith the Corviknight, Golplatt the "Togedemaru", and Pualani the Tsareena
Battle Details:
Allura will be starting off with Keith versus Hitmonlee. While Steel negates Flying's resistance to Fighting, and Hitmonlee's Attack is *very* high, Keith has nearly as good a Defense and should be able to withstand most of Hitmonlee's moves. Blaze Kick might pose a problem though, so Allura will arm Keith with a Lum berry and have him start out with Swagger. This might be risky raising his opponent's Attack even higher, but the confusion should come in handy while Keith uses Iron Defense before diving in to for a barrage of Steel Wings- which also has a chance to raise Keith's defense even more- and Drill Pecks. If Hitmonlee does manage to land a solid hit, that sets Keith up for a Payback, which might not be as effective on a pure Fighting type but should still deal a good bit of damage if the move hit hard enough.
Up next is Golplatt, who gives a few little shivers to show he's totally a Togedemaru and super definitely nervous about being a little Electric/Steel baby against a big strong Fighting type like Hitmonchan. Outside Golplatt's immunity to Normal and Fighting moves, the matchup is fairly even stat-wise, with Hitmonchan having the upper hand (upper glove?) on Attack and has a really nice selection of abilities, while Golplatt has the higher Speed, and his Disguise will make sure the first connecting attack only does 1/8th of his HP in damage. SURPRISE, Golplatt was a Mimikyu this whole time! Hitmonchan totally fell for it, right??? So Golplatt will start out with Double Team (hopefully the Punching Pokemon doesn't have Keen Eye) to make him even harder to hit before darting forward to Play Rough with a few Astonishes thrown in for the flinch chance if Hitmonchan doesn't have Inner Focus. Bullet Punch could still do a lot of damage, but that's where the Mimikyu's Pain Split comes in if Hitmonchan is in better shape, equalizing their HP and potentially bringing the match closer to victory. And Golplatt will also be armed with a Lum berry to protect against the elemental punches' effects.
Last but not least is Pualani versus Poliwrath. This one is a lot more straightforward with Grass vs Water and a huge experience gap. Tsareena will lead with Attract for a 50/50 infatuation chance, followed up by Teeter Dance to confuse the Tadpole Pokémon, which can either stack with the infatuation or be used in place of it, depending on if Poliwrath is into lady-mons. This sets Pualani up to unleash a flurry of Trop Kicks and Power Whips, the former of which should lower Poliwrath's Attack, which should be useful in diminishing any Belly Drums. And thankfully Allura armed Pualani with a Lum berry, so she should be safe from Hypnosis for at least a little while, even if Allura wasn't expecting a sleep-inducing move from a Fighting Pokémon, and eating that Lum Berry should double the power of a well-placed Acrobatics.
Glacier Badge

Elite/Regular: Regular
Team: Chumirra the Azumarill, Plattran the Alolan Raichu, and Plamer the Hisuian Typhlosion
Battle Details:
Ice Bucket Challenge? Meet the Mice Bucket Challege. The next two gym challenges will be nothing but rodents (and rodent cosplayers)!
First up is Chumirra against Dewgong. Chumirra being Water/Fairy grants resistance to Water and Ice, as well as Signal Beam and any Dark moves the Sea Lion Pokémon might have up its sleeve. Still, not only does Dewgong have abilities that either nullify or even have it benefit being hit with Water attacks or rain, it might also be able to know Perish Song via breeding (curse you, B2W2 tournaments). This means the Azumarill will need to take her opponent out quickly, meaning no time to waste on set-up moves, invulnerability, or getting locked into Rollout. Instead, Allura will have Chumirra start with Dynamic Punch which will guarantee confusion if it connects, before she dives in for a flurry of Brick Breaks and Iron Tails- being super-effective and having a chance of lowering Lapras's Defense by a stage, respectively. If Chumirra's health gets low enough or Perish Song is about to kick in, she'll unleash Superpower as a coup de grâce. And just in case, she's armed with a Lum Berry.
Next is Plattran versus Lapras. This one is pretty straightforward, since Lapras still has a weakness to Electric, and Plattran has a tremendous advantage in both attack stats and Speed, and can resist Thunderbolt if Pryce has taught it to Lapras like in the games. Still, Allura will need to be careful of Confuse Ray, any Bug or Ground Moves, and Perish Song, so she'll be arming Plattran with a Lum Berry and having him attack from a distance as hard and as fast as he can. First up, Thunder Wave, since not only will the paralysis mess with Lapras's timing and halve its speed, it'll also prevent it from using Rest, Snore, or Sleep Talk since non-volatile statuses can't stack. And after setting up Electric Terrain- increasing the power of Plattran's Electric attacks, doubling his speed with Surge Surfer, and *really* preventing sleep in case Lapras had a Lum or Cheri Berry to cure the paralysis- the increased difference between the two Pokémon's speeds will bring a well-placed Electro Ball or two to max power. If Lapras tries to get in close for a physical attack, Plattran will retaliate with either Thunder Punch or Sweet Kiss (since confusion CAN stack with other status conditions) before moving away to continue the above strategy.
Lastly, Plamer might seem like an odd choice given Fire is weak to Ground, *but* Mamoswine is the only one of Pryce's Pokémon whose weakness to Fire isn't canceled out (unless it has Thick Fat), and Plamer has a little trick up his sleeve: Burn Up. Not only is it a powerful and accurate Fire-type move to start with, boosted by a Charcoal, it will turn Plamer into a pure Ghost Pokémon for the rest of the match. This'll be followed up by Will-o-Wisp to guarantee a burn, which will not only do extra damage and halve the power of Mamoswine's physical moves, it'll double the power of the following Hex, followed by a series of Flamethrowers and Lava Plumes from a distance, the Charcoal compensating for the loss of STAB. If Mamoswine manages to get in close for a physical attack, Plamer will counter with Rock Smash before darting away to continue the assault of Fire and Ghost special moves, with Blaze kicking in if Plamer takes enough damage and boosting those Fire moves even more.

Character name: Princess Allura
Pokémon: “Coressa” (Alolan Vulpix, main performer) and “Ayrol” (Togetic, supporting actor)
Move used: Mist, Ice Shard, Safeguard, Aurora Beam, Ice Beam, Powder Snow
The performance:
A deep breath… and Allura makes her way towards the mic, clad in a truly stunning gown, her new circlet shining on her brow, and her moon white hair still baring a faint streak of pink from her spa trip a couple of weeks ago. Her Pokémon are nowhere to be seen yet… but when Allura begins to speak, a faint Mist slowly begins to fill the stage.
“Once upon a time, in the oldest days of Altea, in the days of the Ancients and the gods… there was a war.” The spotlights stain the stage and the Mist red and cast harsh shadows on the backdrop, the orchestral score starting with booming brass and heavy drums. “The reasons have been lost to time- squabbling over resources, an insult taken too far- but it does not matter. Just that there was a war, one that the rulers of the lands of Altair and Heleena deemed it worthy of spilling the blood of their subjects to wound each other.”
“Once upon a time… there were two people.” The red eases back to a more natural light and the music to lighter brass and violins. It’s here that Coressa finally makes her appearance, clad in a little cape of dark pink silk that still allows her to move freely about and leaves her beautiful tails on display. “Kiere of Heleena was a warrior unrivaled in martial skill and bravery, fighting tirelessly to protect her fellow warriors and her country.” Coressa shows off that martial prowess gladly, darting about the stage as only a fox can, letting loose the occasional Ice Shard for emphasis.
“That is… until an arrow found its mark. And then a healer found her.” Coressa collapses to the stage with a keening yelp before Ayrol the Togetic hovers over to her as flutes join the ensemble, pale pink and dark blue ribbons tied to his feet like jesses in lieu of a full costume which would hinder his flight. Coressa gives a weak snarl at Ayrol before “fainting,” giving Ayrol a chance to work at “healing” her… and for them to put more of their acting on display. “Even though Aldar wore Altair’s colors, he abhorred the war and only joined to preserve what life he could, even those of his enemies. As he treated Kiere’s wounds, they spoke, and as they spoke, they laughed, and he touched her shoulder… she found she didn’t want his hand to leave.”
Once Coressa is all patched up, she hops to her feet with a soft bark, and the two begin to hop and hover around each other as if dancing, back-to-back on a battlefield, the noble horns dancing around the lighter strings and woodwinds.
“They began to work together, surreptitiously. Kiere would block blows sent Aldar’s way- claiming it was dishonorable to harm a healer.” Complete with Coressa creating a shimmering Safeguard to protect Ayrol from an invisible arrow. “And Aldar would tend to Kiere’s wounds and those of warriors she brought to him, neither of them caring which side they treated. And in the quiet moments between battles, they would meet on the bridge dividing their two lands…” The two Pokemon are still as they look at each other admiringly… “Until an arrow found its mark.”
Coressa very carefully aims an Aurora Beam over Ayrol’s shoulder to make it look like he’s been struck, not wanting to hurt the Flying type. As the lighting flashes red again, she blinks back into character as Kiere mourns Aldar’s sudden death, Ayrol swooning before falling to the stage floor to the sound of booming bass brass and drums.
“Kiere’s screams pierced the air as a stray arrow pierced Aldar’s heart. She rushed to hold him in his last moments, shielding from weapons that had already stilled, shocked not only at the death of a healer but at this display of love and grief.” Coressa follows the narration to a T, pairing the protection with another Safeguard even as she collapses.
“It was then that the gods took pity on them… immediately where the lovers lay, juniberries spread out and around them, a sacred flower representing the cycle of life and love itself, and the fighting immediately stilled under the setting sun.”
This is the part they’ve practiced the most… paired with a lighter, glistening version of the lovers’ leitmotif, Coressa aims a long, powerful Ice Beam at the floor of the stage itself. The crystals rising from the blast bare more than a passing resemblance to the juniberries described, tall and pointed but still delicate, the spotlights adding to the effect by shining deep pink light over the fields to invoke the flowers and the twilight sky, slowly dimming to deep blue.
“And as night fell and both sides signed treaties and made peace, the gods granted Kiere a boon for the sacrifice she and Aldar made. But she only wished to be with Aldar again. So, the gods built a news bridge in the sky, with the stars themselves forming stones. The two brightest stars are the souls of the two lovers, still standing on this new bridge, never to be torn apart again.”
Crowned with Coressa aiming a blast of Powder Snow into the air, and once it clears… a beautiful projection of the Milky Way on the backdrop behind them. It still strikes Allura how similar that streak of stars matches the Star Bridge that once graced Altea’s nights. And once the music stops, Ayrol and Coressa hop up from the floor to take their bows, and Allura gives a curtsy of her own.

Pokemon: Avara the Dusk Lycanroc (main performer) and Coressa the Alolan Ninetales (supporting actor)
Move used: Quick Attack, Rock Slide, Howl, Odor Sleuth, Double Team, Tail Slap, Iron Tail
The performance:
“One upon a time, in the oldest days of Altea, there was a young girl.”
Avara walks onto the stage slowly, fur and stones polished to a fine sheen, but the Lycanroc is downcast and pained.
“Linnari lived in a village like many in those days… but it wasn’t her village. Years before, she had lived with her mother in another village. She spent her day learning to hunt and gather and pray to the gods, helped her mother and other families with chores and errands, and found plenty of time to play with her friends and explore the forest surrounding her home.”
It's here that Coressa walks onto the stage, Avara immediately perking up as she begins to prance with a few playful Quick Attacks. The maternal Coressa mimes giving a few corrections without performing the move herself, Avara nodding and giving Coressa a quick nuzzle.
“But one year, the nearby mountain erupted, burying the town and its people in boiling hot ash and rock.”
The lighting on the stage fills with hot red light and smoke billowing from fog machines, and as Avara lets loose a Rock Slide, Coressa disappears in the chaos and Avara panics, letting out a pained Howl. As the red light fades, she returns to the broken expression from before.
“There were few survivors, and Linnari was the only one left of her family. Mother, elders, friends… all gone. The village that took her and the other survivors in treated her well, did their best to care for her… but it was not her home. The children here had different games, the adults had different ways of preparing food or setting traps, few of the songs her village shared. And when the time of year came for the Alteans of the village to gather and share stories of their departed, the pain only grew sharper and heavier. How was she supposed to bear the history of her whole village alone?”
As Allura speaks, the spotlights form shadow puppets, all seeming to try and console Avara, who only turns a shoulder to them each time, and then… isolation, sitting still and burdened by grief.
“So, one night, in the cover of darkness, she packed a small satchel and a wooden staff, and left her bed and began a journey back to her village.” And off Avara goes, only looking over her shoulder once before continuing on her journey. “The night sky was clear and filled with stars, he knew how to navigate just fine in the daytime, and she knew her home was in roughly a straight line from the village, and then she would come back before the sun even rose. She would be fine, of course. Or… so she thought. But the forest began to grow more and more unfamiliar… She should have passed a stream by now, right? And where was the forked tree? Even as she turned back, she didn’t see any landmarks she passed before.”
Avara looks around in confusion, raising her nose and using Odor Sleuth to try and get a sense of her surroundings, but only shaking her head in failure, the rest of her body trembling too.
“She began to panic and weep, and then… another sound began to emerge from the still night.” The lights turn harsh red again, and a shadow forms that could easily be mistaken for a Bewear or an Ursaluna. “A klanmüirl, a great, hulking predator emerged from the woods and roared at her. She barely held it back with her staff, but she knew she only had seconds left before the stick would snap in its jaws. This would be the end to her, to her family’s history, to her mother’s memory…”
Avara is frozen in panic as the shadow lunges at her, and as the horns and strings rise to a blare, suddenly they and all the lights on stage cut out… for just a second.
“Then she felt it… the soft weight of a hand on her shoulder, a voice she hadn’t heard since that day.”
And when a single spotlight comes back on, there’s Coressa again, putting a paw on Avara’s back, shining brightly in the darkness and tails waving softly. Avara doesn’t turn around, she can’t, but… her body stills too, the tension shifting from fear to strength.
As Avara’s gaze hardens, her body glows and a whole pack of Lycanrocs appear through Double Team. All of them raise their heads for a strong, steady Howl, and though Coressa neither knows the move nor could use it here anyway, she raising her head and voice too. The music now is grand and triumphant as Avara and the pack move perfectly as one to attack the shadow-beast, Coressa mirroring the steps just upstage without performing the moves herself, merely lending strength to her “daughter”. Darting the klanmüirl with a series of Quick Attacks, one or two Tail Slaps to disorient the beast, and then the two Pokémon somersault in the air for Avara to land a decisive Iron Tail, the ground ringing as they lands.
The klanmüirl gets the hint and makes a lumbering gallop away from the crazy girl and her army of ghosts. The Double Team fades but Coressa remains. Avara steps towards her are hesitant, fragile… but Coressa merely smiles. It’s then that Avara darts forward and nuzzles her fiercely, like a child hugging her mother with all her might as Coressa nuzzles back. They’re together again, even if just for a moment.
“But then Linarri heard voices call out, and when she looked back, her mother was gone again.” Avara’s face falls again, but not as deeply as before. “Alteans swarmed to tend to her wounds and usher her back home, making sure the klanmüirl didn’t follow. The pain never truly faded, but it became easier, as she shared the games and songs she knew with the children, as she blended the lessons she learned from her new village with the ones she had learned before. And not always, but every once in a while, she would feel a hand on her shoulder and hear a soft whisper when she missed it most.”
And as Avara mimes the happy ending with the shadow-Alteans, soft strings and woodwinds in the background, the smile on her face steadily grows stronger, if still bittersweet. And as the lights dim a moment, a spotlight shines on Coressa long enough for Avara to look over her shoulder with a soft smile. The lights dim and come back on one last time for “mother and daughter” to take their bows, with Allura giving a curtsy along with them.
March 2023 - Spring
Character name: Princess Allura
Pokemon: Amue the Hisuian Lilligant
Move used: Mega Kick, Rock Smash, Leaf Blade, Close Combat, Sunny Day, Leaf Storm, Petal Blizzard, Solar Blade, Grassy Terrain, Victory Dance
The performance:
By now, people who have seen Allura perform are used to her coming onstage in a pretty dress and narrating a story from Altea while her Pokémon act it out.
Not this time. Instead she marches fully onto the stage, clad in ice blue unitard, holding a quarterstaff painted in pale blue and shimmering white at the ready, gazed focused as if for battle. Her opponent, approaching from the opposite end of the stage at the same poised, steady pace, is Amue, unarmed and unadorned save for the natural gloss of her foliage, but no less beautiful, no less determined.
Once they approach the center, they stand at attention, the light casting Allura’s in a deep cold blue with fluttering snowflakes thanks to a snow machine, Amue’s in rich green, poised woodwinds paying in the background. They size each other up, bow… and then Allura attacks first. The music explodes into a frenzied orchestra as she rushes forward with a loud cry, quarterstaff sweeping out to aim at Amue’s side, Amue dodging by inches before countering with a Mega Kick that Allura dodges into a roll. She lands behind Amue and from her crouch lunges forward to jab with a point, but the Lilligant is still too agile, quickly turning the evasion into a charge for Rock Smash. Allura barely rolls out of the way in time, the ground where she once stood shattered.
The two continue to trade blows, each swing or jab of Allura’s staff met with Rock Smash, Mega Kick, Leaf Blade, on and on. Every time one of Allura’s blows lands, the blue light encroaches on the green and the snow blows harder, but every hit of Amue’s helps the green push back and the wind and snow weaken.
It’s at this point Amue tries to switch to the offensive, lunging forward with a Close Combat flurry of blows. But this just makes it easier for Allura to land a solid hit back. They’ve rehearsed this part down to a light tap, but Amue still sends herself flying to crumple in a heap on her end of the stage, the music growing deep and booming. Allura stands, smirking and slowly walking over towards Amue for a finishing blow, the blue storm almost swallowing the faint green light.
A few twitches… and then Amue struggles to a kneeling position, closing her eyes, taking a slow, deep breath… And then as the music swells with strings, woodwinds, triumphant brass, the pink blossom on the top of her head begins to bloom, growing in strength until it pierces all the way up through the canopy of the trees, bathing the whole forest in a Sunny Day. Not only just the harsh sunlight cause Allura’s Winter to panic, it activates Amue’s Chlorophyll. The Lilligant leaps to her feet in a flash, and even faster than before pushes Allura back with a Petal Blizzard, flooding the stage with a gale of sweet-smelling pink petals, then Leaf Storm pushes Allura back further still. The recoil may have lowered Amue’s Special Attack, but she doesn’t need it as she lunges forward almost faster than anyone can see to land a Solar Blade for the finishing blow. As Allura takes a controlled fall to the ground, the blue light and snow disappear entirely, the flowers kicked up by the petal blizzard now floating through the gentle air.
Spring finally here to stay, Amue summons Grassy Terrain to blanket the stage (and to help her and Allura recover from the bruises they landed on each other) before spinning into a Victory Dance, the twirls slowing so Amue lands facing the audience, one leg bent out fully behind her.
October 2023
Character name: Allura Kogane and Romelle
Pokemon: Oriande the Gardevoir and Bandor the Bewear
Move used: Oriande: Misty Terrain, Will-o-Wisp, Telekinesis, Teleport; Bandor: Strength
The performance: There's a soft noise as Oriande the Gardevoir uses Misty Terrain to cloak the stage in fog. As the lights come up, it's visibly a spooky graveyard. The music starts softly as Allura, masked, and Romelle, also masked, each enter from opposite sides of the stage in their ghostly costumes. They approach one another, then lift their left hands and press their palms together. They circle once, then part ways to reveal that Oriande has used Will-O-Wisp to create a tiny flame in the fog behind them.
"Long ago, a young maiden died before she could be married," Romelle started. "But her love for her fiancé blocked her spirit from crossing over."
"Each night, she searched for her partner, or someone like her partner," Allura continued. "Centuries passed, and, while her fiancé was gone, she still lured in those she felt his energy from."
The Gardevoir does this several times to create a trail of wispy flames, luring in her dance partner... Bandor the Bewear sporting a bow tie. He follows the wisps, slowly seeming to get more and more lost among the mist.
"One day, a young man became entranced by her spells," Romelle said. "Drawn in by her wisps, he soon found himself lost in the fog until he found her grave."
Bandor stops at the last wisp, leaning down to give a close look at the headstone. Oriande rises up from behind it, a veil covering her face. She holds out an arm, and Bandor reaches up as if in a trance and takes the offered arm. Together, the two begin a Viennese Waltz... slow and flowing, twisting and turning together, around and around. Gradually, Oriande uses Telekinesis to lift them both from the floor, continuing their ghostly dance.
"Once she had him, the maiden tried to take him with her to the other side," Allura explained. "But the living cannot travel with the dead. His living spirit was still held firmly, and the maiden, as they danced, began to realize that her time with the living was over."
The dance becomes slower, somber, and the two dancers share a longing look. Using Strength, Bandor lifted Oriande over his head in an elaborate spin, tossing her just high enough. In a flash of blue light Oriande Teleports and vanishes at the height of her toss. Bandor looks around frantically for a moment.
"The maiden knew she could not take the young man with her, no matter how much she wanted to, and, in a show of mercy, she released her hold on him," Romelle said. Slowly, Bandor starts to act like he doesn't remember why he was there, the Misty Terrain beginning to fade from the stage. Now, a clear path out of the graveyard scene was visible.
In the lingering fog upstage, the form of Oriande could be seen peering from behind some prop headstones.
"As the fog lifted, so did her spell," Allura said. "The young man didn't remember why he was in the graveyard that night, but he never forgot the feeling of love he had received for those few moments. Free to go, he left the graveyard and lived a happy life."
Bandor makes his way off the stage again. Oriande steps forward for another moment, then, with another softly rolling Misty Terrain and a blue flash of Teleport, she disappeared from the stage.
"Satisfied with her final dance, the maiden crossed over, never to be seen again."
